University of Calgary , Faculty of Law

Admissions Criteria:

• The Admissions Committee considers a number of factors in addition to academic record and performance on the Law School Admission Test; these factors include evidence of maturity, extra curricular activity, work experience, community involvement, the applicant’s personal statement of why he or she desires a legal education, and reference letters. The University of Calgary, Faculty of Law welcomes applications from persons who have been in the work force after university or who have come to university after their work experience. There is no formal weighting of the factors; individual candidates often compensate for weakness in one area by substantial strengths in others.

• The University of Calgary more so than most Canadian law schools looks at factors other than your LSAT and grades and gives them significant weight in determining admissions.

• 157 – Average LSAT of admitted students in 2006

• When an applicant writes the LSAT more than once the scores will be averaged. This means you want to do as well as possible on your first attempt! However, all scores are included in the application file for the admission committee member to view. A significant increase in score is noted by the reviewer.

• 3.51 on the U of C 4.0 scale (Approximately an B+/A-) – Average GPA of admitted students in 2006

• Your GPA for statistical purposes is calculated based on your LAST 20 half courses or 60 credit equivalents. Courses must be completed by January 1st of the applicant year to be included in the GPA calculation. Grades from graduate course work (i.e. Masters or Ph.D.) are not included in the GPA calculation. However, your transcripts are included in your file, and are reviewed in their totality as part of your academic record.

• Almost all successful applicants have a GPA of at least 3.0 and an LSAT in at least the 55th percentile. If you do not fit into this category, other aspects of your experience will need to be particularly strong for you to be successful. Even if you do fit into this category, that is no guarantee of admission.

• In addition to the application form and transcripts the University of Calgary requires a Statement of Interest and three Reference Letters. It is strongly recommended that two of the three Reference Letters be academic references. The third may be from an employer or colleague.

Fees:

• Canadian Citizens and Permanent Residents – $11,000 – LL.B. Total tuition per year 2006-2007

• International Students – $20,424.45 (11 courses) + $902 per course – LL.B. Total tuition per year 2006-2007

Admissions Criteria:

• Your LSAT carries an admissions weight of 50% with your GPA carrying the remaining 50%. (See Index Score)

• Index Score applicants (the ordinary applicant category) are admitted based solely on an Index Score determined by your GPA and your LSAT.

• Example: A student with a CGPA of 3.7 and an LSAT of 160 would have an Index Score of 74.444. The highest score possible is 100.
